Our ongoing commitment
Every year, Herefordshire comes together to support Refugee Week and celebrate the strength, creativity, and contributions of people seeking safety. It is an important moment for us as a county to recognise the journeys refugees make and to reaffirm our commitment to Herefordshire being a welcoming and supportive place.
Refugee Week is important as it helps build understanding, empathy, and connection. It gives people the opportunity to share experiences, learn from one another, and appreciate the diverse cultures that enrich our communities. Through stories, creativity, food, and shared conversations, we celebrate what "home" means to all of us.
What happens during Refugee Week
Across the county, Refugee Week brings together local groups, partner organisations, volunteers, and residents. Activities vary each year, but often include:
- Community roadshows and displays that explore themes such as belonging, connection, and what community means to people. These displays often grow as people contribute their own items, stories, or cultural artefacts.
- Creative and cultural activities, such as traditional dress displays, photographic exhibitions, and opportunities to learn writing in different languages including Arabic, Persian, Tigrinya, and Ukrainian.
- Film screenings and discussions, such as documentaries highlighting refugee experiences. Past events have included emotional and inspiring films, such as "Afghan Girls Can Kick", that spark meaningful conversations.
- Food, music, and cultural celebrations where families share traditional dishes, crafts, and stories from countries such as Afghanistan, Sudan, Eritrea, Egypt, Bangladesh, Libya, Iran, and Ukraine. These events help people connect through shared experiences and culture. We also have some recipes available that you can try.
- Community engagement and volunteering, including opportunities for new volunteers to join local support networks, and groups interested in helping refugee families across the county.
These events show the power of our community, from making people feel at home to building friendships and supporting one another.
