What to recycle

New items you can recycle

From 1 April 2026, you can recycle aluminium foil, foil trays, metal or foil lined tubes and plastic tubes in your green bin or recycling sack.

Be Clued Up about your recycling

From perfume bottles to plastic tubs, Be Clued Up! Sometimes we don't realise how much we can actually recycle or reuse, this page highlights all items that can be recycled, helping you make more environmentally friendly choices.

If you're not sure about any item, have a look at the lists below or use the recycle checker to find out if we can recycle it, which bin to use, whether it can be reused and where to take it.

Your recycling will be collected fortnightly from your green wheelie bin. If your property is not suitable for wheeled bins we will provide clear plastic sacks for your recycling and a box for your glass.

Always make sure your recycling is:

  • Clean and dry - a quick rinse under the tap to remove any residue will do.
  • Loose in your green bin - please don't put it in a plastic bag and put the bag in your bin.

Aluminium foil

To recycle your aluminium foil:

  • Do the scrunch test to check it's not plastic. If you can't scrunch it into a ball, then it's soft plastic and not foil. Plastics can be recycled at your local supermarket.
  • Wash off any food residue - a wipe or a dip in washing up water is fine.
  • Scrunch smaller pieces of foil into a larger ball, for example a tennis ball size, and place in your recycling bin, this makes it easier for your foil to be recycled.

Foil trays

To recycle your aluminium foil trays:

  • Wash off any food residue.
  • Remove any plastic film lids.
  • Place in your recycling bin.

Metal or foil lined tubes - tomato puree tubes

To recycle metal or foil lined tubes:

  • Squeeze out any remaining product and if possible, wash out any residue.
  • Leave the plastic cap on and place in your recycling bin.

Plastic tubes - toothpaste tubes (including pump action tubes) and cosmetic tubes, like hand cream or make-up tubes

To recycle plastic tubes:

  • Squeeze out any remaining product and if possible, wash out any residue.
  • Leave the plastic lid on as this will be recycled.

Please don't put these in your home recycling

Crockery, drinking glasses and Pyrex dishes

Wood

Don't put any wood or timber in your recycling bin or black bin/sack. Take it to a household recycling centre or there are local businesses that will take it, use the recycle checker to find one.

What happens if you put these items in your recycling bin

If you put any of these items in your recycling bin it contaminates the bin load - and if emptied into the lorry can contaminate an entire lorry load. To avoid this, we will not empty any recycling bin which contains items we can't send to Envirosort, and we will tag the bins as contaminated.

You can also find out what items should not be placed in your black bin/sack.
